Today, the duvet accompanies us throughout the year, and represents an essential element in the same way as the mattress or pillows. However, not easy to find the right one! There are many criteria to take into account, so to enlighten us, we interviewed Christophe Bigot, co-founder of Noctéa, creator of natural bedding and specialist in the subject.

Duvet: what are the right questions to ask before any purchase?

To find the right model, you must first understand that a duvet is above all an insulator, which keeps the body heat in winter and its freshness in summer. I then think that it is necessary to clearly define its needs, to know what we are going to do with its duvet, for the summer and winter period. Because a few years ago, the question did not even arise. People are now much more in demand and the comforter can now adapt. We also think of the 4 season duvet, a good idea, which combines 2 light duvets. Apart from the thermal aspect, other elements must also be taken into account such as the composition or the dimensions.

Precisely, what size of duvet should we choose?

In France, we have a very special quilt culture. We need a good fallout on each side of the mattress. It is sometimes very different in other countries, in Germany for example. In any case, here is what I recommend: - For a 90x190cm bed, choose a 140x200cm duvet, - For a 120x190 bed, choose a 200x200 duvet, - For a 140x190 bed, choose a 220x240 duvet, - For a bed of 160x200, choose a duvet in 240x260, - For a bed of 180x200 and more, choose a duvet in 260x280 and more.

Natural or synthetic, what filling should you choose for your duvet?

In terms of pure comfort, polyester is a very good thing. For equal quality, natural and synthetic are completely equal. However, there is a phenomenon that drives customers today. New values are added to well-being, such as ecology and the consequences for the environment. Thus, more responsible consumption directs manufacturers to bet even more on down, feather or wool - French at Noctea, which is rarer.

What about the envelope?

Here, same observation! We play on the quality of fabric. We take into account the weaving density, which will make the envelope more and more silky. Beyond 80 threads per square centimeter, we speak of percale. And we are also interested in the stitching, which should be neither too tight, so as not to block the comfort, nor too loose to prevent the material, the upholstery in short, wandering around. Criteria that can guarantee you a bulking effect. The price is not always a guarantee of quality, but generally, the more you go upmarket, the more you will be sure not to go wrong.

And the treatment of the comforter in all this?

Duvets, like any other bedding item, benefit from an anti-mite treatment. Again, the different treatments can be chemical or much cleaner. Thus, this choice is necessarily linked to the rest of the criteria. Because both systems are necessarily effective. The next step is to be consistent and the manufacturers have understood this. It is anyway very rare to find organic cotton duvets treated with Microstop but rather with Greenfirst products, based on essential oils.
