Answer: an insert must be swept regularly.

Obviously, all heaters must be swept, including the inserts. At a minimum, you will need to have your insert swept once a year according to the law. Ideally, at least twice a year: the first at the start of winter, the second at the end of winter for example. Perhaps more if your installation poses difficulties. It is essential to use a certified chimney sweep company, and thus avoid any compliance problem. For your safety, it would be wiser to also install a smoke detector in the same room as the insert. Remember to read your insurance contract carefully.
